Tasting Highlights: 2005 California Cabernet Sauvignon: Wine Spectator

Of the triumvirate of white Burgundy villages—Meursault, Puligny and Chassagne—it's Puligny that has a little extra raciness to its structure and a little more breed and sophistication in its personality. This holds true for a year like 2006, when rapid ripening of the grapes over a three-day period in September resulted in soft, heavy wines for those who missed the optimum harvest window. Below is a group of outstanding Pulignys, mostly from top premier cru sites, that merit your attention. The two Jadot wines are particularly good values.

LOUIS JADOT Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 2006 Score: 93 | $80 The breed and finesse shows, with delicate hazelnut, peach and citrus flavors playing out over a mineral base. This is extremely supple, with a creamy texture and an expansive aftertaste. Terrific harmony and complexity. Drink now through 2018. —B.S. LOUIS JADOT Puligny-Montrachet Clos de la Garenne Domaine Duc de Magenta 2006 Score: 92 | $80 Spice and butterscotch aromas lead to peach and mineral notes in this elegant, ripe white. Smooth and bright, with harmony and a lingering savory finish. Drink now through 2016. —B.S.
